Research on the treatment of Syrian asylum seekers in CEE

July 2013 - Kinstellar recently performed a pro bono mandate for ECRE, the European Council on Refugees and Exiles, a pan-European alliance of 77 NGOs protecting and advancing the rights of refugees, asylum seekers and displaced persons. The work involved research and analysis of judgements from courts in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania involving requests for asylum submitted by Syrian refugees.

The work was part of a broader research project on the situation of Syrian asylum seekers in the EU. ECRE will use the information to prepare a report on the treatment of refugees from Syria in the various EU Member States from the start of the civil war in 2011 to 2013. The initiative should help lawyers assisting refugees and support recommendations on how to improve the situation of Syrian refugees in EU countries.

In 2012 alone, some 23,500 Syrians applied for asylum in the EU. The UN estimates that more than 80,000 people in Syria have lost their lives in the conflict since March 2011. According to official statistics, there are 1.2 million registered Syrian refugees, 4.5 million internally displaced persons and about 6.8 million people in need.

Viliam Mysicka, Martina Manurova, Jakub Berthoty, Hana Gawlasova, Jan Pfeffer, Adam Nemec, Nora Deme, Tamas Olah, Bogdan Bibicu, Larisa Gabudeanu and Smaranda Vacaru contributed to ECRE’s research on behalf of Kinstellar. The mandate was taken through PILnet (The Global Network for Public Interest Law), a global pro bono clearinghouse.
